In a significant setback for Bangladesh, their standout performer and the highest run-scorer of the Asia Cup 2023, Najmul Hossain Shanto, has been sidelined from the tournament due to an unfortunate injury.

Shanto’s remarkable journey in the Asia Cup came to an abrupt halt when he experienced discomfort in his left hamstring while compiling a brilliant century, scoring 104 runs against Afghanistan in Lahore on September 3rd.

An MRI conducted the following day revealed a muscle tear, confirming the severity of Shanto’s injury. The Bangladesh Cricket Board’s (BCB) medical team recommended rest to ensure his full recovery and readiness for the upcoming ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023, which is just a month away.

National Team Physio Bayjedul Islam Khan shed light on the situation, stating, “The player had complained of hamstring pain during batting and could not field. We had an MRI scan done confirming a muscle tear.”

“As a precaution, Shanto will not take any further part in the tournament and will be returning home to start rehab and prepare for the World Cup.”

While no replacement for Shanto has been announced yet, Bangladesh can take solace in the return of Litton Das, who has recovered from a fever. His comeback will provide a significant boost to the team’s prospects.

Bangladesh’s journey in the Asia Cup has seen ups and downs. They began their campaign with a loss against Sri Lanka but rebounded with a commanding 89-run victory over Afghanistan. With an impressive net run rate (NRR), they have secured a spot in the Super Four stage.
