Kane Williamson is in doubt for the World Cup due to an injury in the Indian Premier League. Kiwi team management wants to miss out on his experience. For this reason, he can be seen as the mentor of the New Zealand team in the World Cup.
New Zealand coach Gary Stead said that they can keep this right-handed batsman with the team as a mentor on the stage of the world’s best.
In the opening match of the current IPL, Williamson of Gujarat Titans suffered a severe knee injury after falling while fielding to save a six on the boundary. He was knocked out of the tournament as a result, returned home on crutches.
Williamson’s anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) was torn, doctors said. Because of this, he had a successful surgery. The fight back is now underway in rehabilitation.
It usually takes 6 months to recover from this type of surgery. That is why Williamson’s game in this year’s ODI World Cup has fallen into uncertainty.
The next World Cup is in India. The tournament may start on October 5. Earlier it was difficult for Williamson to get fit.
Williamson was asked at a press conference at Stade on Wednesday, the day before New Zealand’s five-match ODI series against Pakistan, whether Williamson would be retained as a mentor for the World Cup. “Yes, of course,” said the New Zealand coach.
However, Stead is not giving up the hope of getting Williamson in the World Cup as a player. “At the moment, our understanding of Ken is that there is little chance of getting him. But we certainly don’t want to discount a player of his quality and caliber who adds a lot to the team.”
