Former Australian cricket star, Matthew Hayden, has shared his invaluable insights and predictions for the highly-anticipated Asia Cup 2023 showdown between India and Pakistan, set to unfold at Pallekele on Saturday.
Hayden highlighted the presence of some of the world’s most electrifying bowlers in this contest, singling out Shaheen Afridi, Haris Rauf, and Naseem for special mention.
In an interview with Star Sports, Hayden emphasized the importance of adapting to the unique playing conditions in Kandy, known for its substantial bounce. He cautioned that Haris Rauf, with his blistering pace and precision in targeting the off-stump, could pose a significant challenge to the Indian batsmen.
“India is facing Pakistan’s formidable pace trio. Let me tell you, this is one of the most exhilarating contests on the cricketing globe. We have Shaheen Afridi, Haris Rauf, and Naseem â€?three bowlers with distinct styles that demand bespoke strategies from Team India. Firstly, Kandy’s conditions are known for their bounce, so we must be vigilant, especially when dealing with Haris Rauf. He’ll be eager to charge in and hit the top of that off-stump,” Hayden remarked.
“Against Shaheen Afridi, a degree of caution is advised. Think back to the recent World Cup; Shaheen had the knack of securing early wickets. Who can forget that delivery to dismiss Captain Rohit Sharma? So, a touch of prudence when confronting Shaheen Afridi. If the ball is swinging, aim to survive those initial three overs,” he added.
In his overall assessment, the former Australian batsman expressed his belief in Team India’s advantage in the match. He cited their deeper and more polished batting lineup, coupled with their good recent form.
“Regarding Naseem, even though he has the ability to shape the ball, Pakistan could be pushed on the back foot by India’s aggressive approach against someone like Naseem. Apply pressure, and you’ll feel like you’re in control of the game. Nevertheless, all in all, I believe Team India will emerge victorious. They possess a more extensive and sophisticated batting roster, and they’ve exhibited excellent form,” he concluded.
