Johnson Charles Earns Recall to West Indies Squad for Cricket World Cup Qualifier

West Indies have made an exciting addition to their squad for the Cricket World Cup Qualifier, bringing back the in-form opener Johnson Charles in place of an injured spinner.
The experienced opener, Johnson Charles, who played a crucial role in the West Indies’ victory in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2016, has been rewarded with a spot in the squad for the upcoming ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Qualifier. Despite a period of being out of contention, Charles showcased a spectacular return to form and secured his spot in the team for the highly anticipated tournament.
Charles, 34, has impressed with his performances this year, including a remarkable innings of 118 runs off just 46 balls against South Africa in a T20I match in March, which included 11 sixes and 10 boundaries. He capitalized on an unexpected opportunity when he was added to the West Indies squad for three ODIs against the UAE after Devon Thomas’ suspension. In the second ODI, he played a vital role by scoring 63 runs off 47 deliveries, contributing to a West Indies victory.
Charles will replace Gudakesh Motie in the 15-member squad as the left-arm spinner is still recovering from a lower back injury. The West Indies selectors initially contemplated adding another spinner to the squad but ultimately decided on Charles’ recall.
Having played 50 ODIs for the West Indies since his debut in 2012, Charles brings a wealth of experience to the team. He has scored 1370 runs in the format at an average of 27.40, including two centuries.
West Indies lead selector Desmond Haynes expressed confidence in Charles’ abilities, stating, “He is experienced at the international level, and we believe he will be a valuable addition to the team in this important tournament. He also possesses knowledge of the Zimbabwe conditions from his previous ODI matches there, making him the right choice for the job at this stage.”
The Cricket World Cup Qualifier will take place in Zimbabwe from June 18, with West Indies commencing their campaign against the USA on the same day. They will also face Nepal on June 22, Zimbabwe on June 24, and the Netherlands on June 26 in Group A. The top three teams from the group stage will progress to the Super Six stage.
Securing a top-two finish at the Cricket World Cup Qualifier will guarantee a spot in the prestigious ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup, scheduled to be held in India later this year.
