Having retired from international cricket in 2020, the 31-year-old cricketer is currently pursuing British citizenship due to his wife’s British nationality. Once he secures this status, he will finalize his contract with Derbyshire.
Previously, Amir has represented Essex and Gloucestershire in county cricket and played for London Spirit in the inaugural season of the Hundred. Upon acquiring British citizenship, he will also have the opportunity to play in the Hundred as a local player.
Amir’s cricketing journey has had its share of controversies. In 2010, at the age of 18, he gained notoriety when he was involved in a spot-fixing scandal along with Mohammad Asif during a Test tour of England. As a consequence, the International Cricket Council imposed a five-year ban on him, and he served a six-month custodial sentence in young offenders’ institutes in Feltham and Dorset. Mohammad Asif and captain Salman Butt also faced similar penalties.
However, Amir made a comeback to international cricket in 2016 before deciding to retire during the pandemic. Subsequently, he has played cricket in Pakistan, England, Bangladesh, and the Caribbean. Throughout his career, Amir showcased his talents as a world-class bowler in all three formats, claiming an impressive tally of 259 wickets for Pakistan, including 119 in Test matches.
